Why this exists

One neutral source of truth for payments.

Payments data is scattered across PSP marketing pages, stale blogs, and paywalled industry reports. We consolidate it, date it, and keep it honest — for shoppers, merchants, journalists, and anyone who needs to trust what they're reading.

Structured, not scraped

Every method follows the same schema: category, regions, currencies, fees, settlement, auth flow, refund policy, regulators. Comparable at a glance, not buried in prose.

Cited and dated

Every figure links to a primary source — central banks, scheme filings, regulator reports. Dates visible on every page. No anonymous claims, no marketing spin.

Every market, one place

From Indonesia's GoPay to Kazakhstan's Kaspi QR, from SEPA Instant to Argentina's Mercado Pago. Local methods matter — catalogued with the same rigor as the global ones.

Vendor-neutral

We don't sell integrations, we don't take affiliate placements inside reference pages, we don't run a PSP. Ordering reflects the data, not who signed a cheque.

Versioned forever

Fees, regions, regulations all change. We snapshot every page weekly and keep history. A claim you read today still makes sense in a year.

Reader-first

No popups mid-read, no 12 CTAs, no dark patterns. A quiet reference that loads fast, respects your time, and links only where it's actually useful.

Questions, answered

Online payment methods, briefly.

Quick answers for shoppers, merchants, and anyone arriving via search. Deeper explanations will live on each method's dedicated page.

What is an online payment method?

An online payment method is any instrument or rail used to transfer value between a payer and a payee over the internet. It includes card schemes (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, UnionPay), digital wallets (PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay, WeChat Pay), real-time bank rails (UPI, Pix, SEPA Instant, FedNow), buy-now-pay-later services (Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm), prepaid vouchers (Paysafecard, Boleto, OXXO), and cryptocurrencies (BTC, ETH, stablecoins).

What is the most used online payment method in the world?

Digital wallets are the most used category, accounting for roughly 53% of global e-commerce transaction value in 2025. Among individual brands, PayPal leads in Western markets by merchant acceptance, Alipay and WeChat Pay dominate mainland China, and UPI dominates India by transaction count — in Q3 2025 UPI processed more monthly transactions than Mastercard globally.

How many online payment methods exist globally?

There is no single authoritative count, but the global landscape includes 4 major international card schemes, 10+ regional card schemes, 500+ digital wallets, 60+ real-time account-to-account rails, dozens of BNPL providers, and a growing crypto layer. paymentmethods.online is building the first canonical database to catalogue them all in one place.

Which online payment methods have the lowest fees?

Account-to-account real-time rails typically have the lowest merchant fees — often zero or a few cents per transaction. UPI in India, Pix in Brazil, SEPA Instant in Europe, and FedNow in the US all fall in this category. International card schemes and BNPL providers sit at the high end, ranging from 2% to 6% plus fixed fees.

What's the difference between a payment method and a payment gateway?

A payment method is the instrument the shopper chooses (Visa, PayPal, Pix). A payment gateway is the technical service that accepts that method and routes it to an acquirer or issuer (Stripe, Adyen, Checkout.com, Airwallex). One gateway typically supports dozens to hundreds of methods. paymentmethods.online catalogues the methods themselves, not the gateways — but we cross-reference which gateways support which methods.

Why does local payment method support matter for ecommerce?

Conversion, plainly. A checkout that only offers Visa and Mastercard will lose transactions in Germany (Giropay, SEPA), the Netherlands (iDEAL), Brazil (Pix, Boleto), India (UPI), China (Alipay, WeChat), and Poland (BLIK). Local payment methods are also processed through local rails, which means higher issuer approval rates and lower fees.
